Kenji Sugibayashi
(President of Josai International University)

It is our great pleasure to announce the establishment of Josai Center for ASEAN Studies on the occasion of special public lecture on our campus by His Excellency, Tun Mahathir bin Mohamad, who guided Malaysia for 22 years as its Prime Minister, providing strong leadership. The objective of its creation lies in further developing our relations with ASEAN member states and their institutions of higher education through various programs; we hope to build upon our current relationship with 24 sister institutions in six ASEAN countries. Its main activities should include student and faulty development by establishing new relationships with institutions of higher education, and setting up exchange programs; supporting the development of academic programs by establishing courses on ASEAN studies, attracting researchers and scholars for those courses, and seeking funds from grant-making organizations and private enterprises to support them; and promoting interaction with public and private sectors by planning, organizing and realizing guest lectures and internship programs. Through those endeavors, the center wishes to develop valuable human resources who will be important contributors to the society. I wish to express my sincerest gratitude to our kind supporters, and ask for continuous assistance to this ambitious undertaking.
