Josai visits sister schools in Tianjin, Dalian and Shenyang

Josai University Educational Corporation delegation led by Chancellor ad interim Motoyuki Ono paid a visit to seven partner schools in Tianjin, Dalian and Schenyang area, to enhance our relations and to discuss possibilities to expand academic exchange.

Tianjin Foreign Studies University

On June 4th, 2017, the delegates visited Tianjin Foreign Studies University in the city of Tianjin where they met with President Xiu Gang. International collaboration with Tianjin Foreign Studies University began in 2008, and many students from their Japanese Language Institute, International Media Institute, Binhai School of Foreign Affairs (master’s course) and its graduate schools come to study at Josai every year. 10 graduate students have begun their six months study at the Graduate School of Business Design from April, 2017, and 12 new students will arrive in September.

President Xiu Gang kindly expressed his gratitude to Josai for many years of cooperation and joint educational achievements. Deans and directors of their graduate schools joined President Xiu to discuss possible future collaborative programs. Newly appointed director of School of Translation and Interpreting, Professor Hua Chao, was specially introduced to our delegates; both parties expressed high expectations at the prospect of Tianjin-Josai collaboration in the field of Chinese-Japanese translation and interpretation.

Dalian University of Foreign Languages

On June 5th, Josai delegation made a courtesy call to President Liu Hong of Dalian University of Foreign Languages, to review the results of mutual educational cooperation, and to agree on continuing support in promoting academic relations.
  During the meeting, it was reported that educational effect had been greatly enhanced by grouping smaller number of students in Japanese language classes.
  The delegation later participated in Tea Ceremony performed by Chinese students.

Later in the day, a meeting with professors and students of Japan-China Joint Ph.D. Program was held at the hotel where the delegates were staying.

Dalian University of Science and Technology

In the afternoon of July 6th, our delegates, accompanied by Mrs. Otsu, wife of late Takashi Murai, who had a significant role in our academic and educational relations with Dalian University of Science and Technology, and his oldest son, Mr. Hiroyuki Murai, participated in the meeting hosted by Party Secretary Wang Hansong from the university. During the meeting, Secretary Wang kindly expressed his gratitude for long-lasting relation between the two institutions. Both parties agreed on further efforts to develop new cooperative programs.

Afterwards, for the thirteenth consecutive year, new publications were donated to Mizuta Mikio Memorial Book Collection. Professor Kazunobu Fukushima of Josai University presented the catalog of books to Deputy Director of Faculty of Management and Economics, Professor Wu Haowen.

Dongbei University of Finance and Economics

The delegates paid a visit to Dongbei University of Finance and Economics during the afternoon of June 6, where they met with President Xia Chunyu. The meeting was also attended by Vice-President Zhao Yanzhi; Director of the International Exchange Center, Zhang Yuci; Director of Academic Affairs, Zhang Juntao; and university professor, Fang Aixiang. Dongbei expressed its desire to establish a 2 + 2 joint education program and several short-term exchange programs; for undergraduate and graduates. Dongbei also suggested that faculty exchange and interaction through sport and recreation programs should be considered in addition to exchange of students.

North Eastern University

On June 7th, Josai representatives were invited to the atelier of Professor Wang Xiqi from Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang city.

They also met with faculty members of North Eastern University School of Foreign Languages Program, who are alumni or current participants of Japan-China Joint Ph.D. Program of Josai. The delegates were greeted by two graduates of Josai International University, now faculty members of North Eastern University School of Foreign Languages; Mrs. Miyuki Hatori and Mr. Akihiro Sakanishi, both of whom graduated from the Department of Global Communications, Graduate School of Humanities in March 2015. (the two positions North Eastern University School of Foreign Languages Program allocates for its Japanese language teachers are occupied by Josai International University alumni). Josai is proud and happy for two young professors who are actively participating in Japanese language education.

Following that stop, there was a meeting with Vice-President Wang Jianhua; Professor Chen Fan, Chef Director of Research Center for Science Technology and Society; Assistant Director Wang Qiuju of School of Foreign Languages; Director Hang Zhonjung, International Education Center; and Mrs. Lu Yang from International Cooperation and Exchange Department. Vice-President Wang is an expert in analytical chemistry. In the meeting, both sides agreed on a mutual goal to promote higher education and to broaden international exchange between North Eastern University and Josai.

Shenyang Normal University

In the morning of June 8th, our delegates visited Shenyang Normal University’s President Lin Qun. The school tour started from the university’s Paleontology Museum, guided by its director, Professor Sun Ge, followed by a meeting with President Lin.

Shenyang Normal University is the third largest university in Liaoning Province, with expansive faculties in humanities and social studies; furthermore it is a comprehensive institution with highly developed Department of Art, and the College of Tourism Management. The College is currently considered as the leading institution of tourism education in China. As Josai International University owns its Faculty of Tourism, both sides expressed interest in cooperating in that field.

Shenyang Pharmaceutical University

In the afternoon, the delegates moved to the last stop of their business trip, Shenyang Pharmaceutical University.
  Arriving on its Benxi campus, they met with university representatives: President Bi Kaishun; Vice-President Cheng Mao Sheng; School of Pharmacy, Dean Fang Liang; Department of International Relations Director Cai Hongyu; Director Xia Huanzhang; Life Science and Biopharmaceutics, Dean Yang Jingyu; and Traditional Chinese Medicine department, Professor Lu Jincai. As Dean Fang Liang had previously studied under Professor Yasunori Morimoto and Professor Kenji Sugibayashi at Josai University’s Faculty Pharmaceutical Sciences, the trip was a very special occasion.

The representatives debated the strengths, as well as similarities of the two universities and discussed ideas on possible mutual educational cooperation in the field of pharmaceutical science. At Shenyang Pharmaceutical University, approximately 90 students exclusively study Japanese language during their first year; followed by four years study of pharmaceutical studies in both Chinese and Japanese language. This arrangement should facilitate exchange of students and faculty members with Josai, and we expect active interaction in the immediate future.
  After the meeting, the delegates toured its institute of pharmaceutical development and other facilities, equipped with the latest technologically advanced apparatuses.
